Teens and young professionals are the age brackets most susceptible to depression. With teenagers it is usually caused by personality and identity crises. As they search for the meaning of life and the purpose of their actions, they are sometimes caught into too many questions they all try to seek answer for at the same time. Many of these circumstances tangle especially when they encounter philosophical issues that shake their beliefs and stands.

Learning about the signs of depression and what you can do about them is the first step to overcoming your problem. Depression may make you feel extremely sad, or just listless and numb. It takes over your life, makes it hard to have fun, sleep, eat, study, or do just about anything. Intense, unrelenting feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and other negative emotions are extremely common. These are just some of the signs of depression.

Often motivated by the conviction of worthlessness and powerlessness are other symptoms of depression that can be easily observed in people who prefer to be depressed all day. There is always the feeling that they do not deserve to be happy and this only adds to other symptoms they feel. Signs of depression are very clear and visible to the layman, but the person who suffers from depression and low self-esteem, probably can not see their situation improve.

One sign that an employee is suffering from depression is a change in work ethic. Watch for behavioral changes, such as the sudden appearance of tardiness, absenteeism, decreased productivity, diminished work quality, isolation from co-workers, angry outbursts and frequent comments about feeling fatigued.

Apart from these, the results gained by taking medications are usually limited. Many patients do not feel any improvement at all in their depressive condition. So we should try to avoid medication and only take them if the depression condition becomes extreme.

Unfortunately, people over the age of 65 are four times more likely to suffer from depression than younger people. However, elderly sufferers do not always exhibit the classic signs. Instead, they may show signs of dementia, complain of aches and pains, and appear agitated, anxious, or irritable.

Depression is a deadly condition that if left unattended can escalate to self harm and even suicide. Depression in children is very similar to depression in adults with a few exceptions. These exceptions are that children are not as articulate as adults in expressing emotions, so it is unlikely that they will come to you and say "I'm depressed". In fact they may not even realize that something is out of the ordinary.
